One of the questions we hear most from our guests at Shawnee Forest Hideaway is:
“We’re planning to visit Garden of the Gods…what else should we see while we’re out that way?”
We’re always happy to help! One of the best parts about staying in Southern Illinois is that the drive to Garden of the Gods Recreation Area is packed with scenic overlooks, historic sites, lakes, hiking trails, and unique local restaurants. Instead of making it a simple drive, turn it into a full-day adventure you’ll remember long after your vacation ends.
Here’s our favorite itinerary.
Stop 1: Breakfast at Golconda Dari-Barr
Start your morning with breakfast at one of Golconda’s hometown favorites. The Golconda Dari-Barr isn’t fancy—but that’s exactly why we love it. It’s the kind of local diner where you’ll find friendly faces, hearty breakfasts, and a taste of small-town Southern Illinois before heading into the forest.
Fuel up because you’ve got an adventure ahead!
Stop 2: Rauchfuss Hill Overlook
Just a few minutes outside of town is one of Southern Illinois’ hidden gems.
Rauchfuss Hill offers incredible panoramic views overlooking the Ohio River Valley. It’s an easy stop that many visitors drive right past without ever knowing it’s there. Bring your camera—it’s one of the best scenic overlooks in Pope County.
Early morning light makes this stop especially beautiful.
Stop 3: Lake Tecumseh
Next, enjoy a peaceful drive through the Shawnee National Forest to Lake Tecumseh.
This quiet lake is a wonderful place to stretch your legs, watch for wildlife, enjoy the reflections on the water, or simply soak in the peaceful surroundings before continuing your journey.
If you’re lucky, you may spot deer, wild turkey, turtles, or a variety of birds along the shoreline.
Stop 4: Lunch at The Fish Dock
By lunchtime, head to one of the area’s most unique dining experiences.
The Fish Dock serves fresh seafood while overlooking the Ohio River, and depending on where you’re seated, you’ll feel like you’re dining right on the water. Watching barges and boats travel the river while enjoying lunch is an experience that’s uniquely Southern Illinois.
If seafood isn’t usually your thing, don’t worry—the menu has something for just about everyone.
Stop 5: Cave-In-Rock State Park
After lunch, travel a little farther east to Cave-In-Rock State Park.
This massive cave overlooking the Ohio River has a fascinating history dating back to the late 1700s. It once served as a landmark for river travelers and became famous as the hideout of river pirates and outlaws who preyed on passing flatboats.
Today it’s one of the most photographed locations in Southern Illinois and offers spectacular river views.
Allow yourself time to explore the cave and walk the riverfront.
Stop 6: Rim Rock National Recreation Trail
Before arriving at Garden of the Gods, make one more stop at Rim Rock.
This relatively short hike leads to towering sandstone bluffs, unique rock formations, and breathtaking overlooks of the surrounding forest. Many locals consider it one of the most underrated hikes in Shawnee National Forest.
The rock formations here provide fantastic opportunities for photography, especially during spring and fall.
Stop 7: Garden of the Gods Recreation Area
Finally, you’ll arrive at one of Illinois’ most iconic destinations.
Garden of the Gods Recreation Area is famous for its incredible sandstone formations, panoramic overlooks, and the Observation Trail—a short, easy hike that rewards visitors with some of the most breathtaking views in the Midwest.
Whether you’re visiting during spring wildflower season, lush summer greenery, brilliant autumn colors, or even after a light snowfall, Garden of the Gods never disappoints.
Take your time exploring the unique rock formations, enjoy the overlooks, and don’t forget your camera.
Return to Shawnee Forest Hideaway
After a full day of exploring, there’s nothing better than returning to your private cabin tucked away in the woods.
Relax in the hot tub overlooking the forest, enjoy a campfire under the stars, and relive the memories from your adventure through Shawnee National Forest.
That’s exactly what a getaway here is all about.
